Match the page's actual purpose
A title promising a complete benchmark needs genuine benchmark evidence. A practical checklist should say what it helps inspect. Avoid superlatives or dates that imply reporting the page does not contain.
Keep the main heading coherent with the title. They do not need to be identical, but they should describe the same answer and scope.
Write the metadata
- Place the recognizable topic naturally in the title.
- Add the useful angle: calculation, diagnosis, comparison or process.
- Keep brand wording proportionate to the page's subject.
- Summarize the answer and practical value in the description.
- Check uniqueness across pages with related topics.
There is no fixed character count that guarantees display. Length guidance can help drafting, but clarity and the rendered search context matter.
Metadata review table
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Accuracy | Does the page fulfill the promise? |
| Distinction | Can a reader tell this page from related guides? |
| Clarity | Is the product or topic recognizable? |
| Natural wording | Would a human choose this phrasing without a keyword quota? |
Worked example: a more specific promise
Illustrative example: “The Best Marketing Guide Ever” gives little information. “Conversion lag reporting: compare mature customer outcomes” explains a specific task. A matching description can state that the guide defines outcome timing, partial cohorts and fair comparisons.
That wording helps a reader choose the right page. It does not guarantee the search engine will display the exact metadata or rank the article above others.
Avoid duplicated descriptions
A site-wide sentence repeated on every article loses the distinction between reader tasks. Use the page's actual answer and method. Automated checks can detect identical strings, but editorial review still needs to inspect meaning.
Is the meta description a promise of ranking improvement?
No. It supports a clear representation of the page, while search visibility depends on a wider set of factors.
Should titles include the current year?
Only when the date meaningfully affects the content and the page supports that claim. A year should not substitute for actual maintenance.
Put this into practice
Compare the titles and descriptions of five related pages. Rewrite any pair whose wording could be swapped without changing the apparent promise.
