The short answerA content refresh audit checks whether an existing page still answers its reader's question accurately and usefully. Review facts, sources, examples, links and scope. A new date alone does not make an article current; the content needs a substantive reason to change.

Separate decay from normal variation

Traffic can change because of demand, seasonality, search appearance or competition. It does not automatically prove the article is outdated. Inspect the question the page serves and compare visibility, visits and business outcomes before deciding what to repair.

Also review pages with steady traffic. A stable visitor count can coexist with obsolete instructions or unsupported claims.

Run the audit

  1. Confirm that the main answer remains accurate.
  2. Verify important platform details against current primary sources.
  3. Check broken internal and external links.
  4. Review whether examples and conditions still fit the audience.
  5. Compare the page's scope with related articles.
  6. Record the substantive update and date honestly.

Preserve useful material instead of rewriting everything for novelty. A refresh should improve the answer or usability.

Two pages overlap heavilyClarify roles or consider consolidation carefully.
Only the date looks oldDo not change it without meaningful content work.

Worked example: an outdated event definition

Illustrative example: a guide describes a conversion event using terminology that no longer matches the measurement system. The refresh explains the current terminology and preserves the business distinction between a click and a completed outcome. The update note states what changed.

Adding a new year to the title without checking the underlying event definition would leave the reader with the same incorrect guidance.

Maintain a small update queue

Prioritize pages where outdated information could mislead decisions, then pages with important audience demand and a clear improvement opportunity. A refresh backlog should state the problem and source to check, not merely “make longer.”

Should old pages be deleted automatically?

No. Age alone is not a quality verdict. Review usefulness, accuracy and overlap before making a removal decision.

Should every update change the publication date?

Keep original publication and meaningful modification dates distinct where available. Do not imply new publication when only a minor correction occurred.

Put this into practice

Review five commercially relevant articles and record one evidence-backed improvement for each. Update the substance first, then reflect the modification accurately in visible and structured metadata.
