The short answerCOD lead quality is the likelihood that an eligible initial order progresses into a suitable completed business outcome. Cost per form alone cannot describe that quality. Compare confirmation, delivery and contribution under mature cohorts before declaring the cheapest source the best.

Define quality operationally

Quality can involve accurate contact, understood offer, genuine intent and serviceable delivery conditions. Do not turn these into unsupported stereotypes about audiences or regions. Use actual records and customer evidence.

Separate acquisition promise problems from fulfillment failures. A campaign can attract suitable buyers who later encounter an operational issue; the source should not automatically receive all blame.

Compare sources fairly

  1. Use the same eligible initial-order definition.
  2. Allow equivalent time for confirmation and delivery.
  3. Link operational statuses to sources where reliable and appropriate.
  4. Include the costs of unsuccessful attempts.
  5. Review product and region mix that may explain differences.

If the source link is incomplete, state the limitation. A precise-looking quality rate is not useful when many orders are assigned incorrectly.

Worked example: cheap forms, expensive delivered orders

Illustrative example: source A spends 1,000 MAD and produces 100 initial orders, of which 20 deliver. Source B spends 1,200 MAD and produces 60 initial orders, of which 40 deliver. Form cost is 10 MAD for A and 20 MAD for B; media cost per delivered order is 50 MAD for A and 30 MAD for B.

This still excludes other costs and does not prove causal quality differences. It shows why the early metric can rank sources differently from the later outcome.

StageDiagnostic question
FormDid the person express relevant demand?
ConfirmationWere intent and conditions clarified?
DispatchCan the business fulfill accurately?
Delivery and collectionDid the intended economic outcome complete?

Use the findings in creative

If poor-fit orders arise from unclear product size, price or delivery conditions, repair the message. Filtering demand through clearer expectations can reduce form volume while improving operational quality.

Should campaigns optimize directly for delivery?

Use a reliable and appropriate signal where the system supports it. Measurement delay and data quality need consideration; do not configure a later outcome blindly.

Can low form cost still be useful?

Yes, if the business understands progression and contribution. The problem is treating it as the complete success measure.

Put this into practice

Compare two mature acquisition cohorts through delivered outcomes. Identify whether the largest quality gap begins before confirmation or after dispatch, then choose the corresponding repair.
