Define inactivity carefully
Daily inactivity means little for a product used monthly. Distinguish a normal pause from a meaningful drop in value. Consider product type, customer task and previous behavior, and avoid treating all customers as one recurring-use pattern.
A cancelled customer may belong in a different win-back process. Keep the current account or purchase state clear so the communication is accurate.
Build the campaign
- Define inactivity and the eligible customer population.
- Inspect likely obstacles through behavior and support context.
- Offer a relevant use case, update or help route.
- Exclude people for whom the message is inappropriate.
- Measure resumed useful behavior and later value.
A general discount can restart a purchase without solving why the customer stopped receiving value. Choose the intervention around the strongest evidence.
Reactivation diagnosis
| Situation | Useful response |
|---|---|
| Setup was incomplete | Offer focused implementation help. |
| The task occurs seasonally | Communicate near the relevant occasion. |
| A known issue was repaired | Explain the repair accurately. |
| The need has changed | Avoid pressure and respect the changed fit. |
Worked example: activity is not value
Illustrative example: an email brings users back to a software dashboard, but they still do not complete the workflow they need. Login count rises while useful behavior remains unchanged. The next step is to address the workflow obstacle, not announce successful reactivation from visits alone.
Track a defined value event and an appropriate later window. The customer relationship matters more than a momentary return.
Keep the message modest
Say what has changed or what help is available. Do not imply that the customer is failing by being inactive. Some pauses are rational, and a relevant message can acknowledge that without making assumptions.
Should reactivation always include an incentive?
No. A clearer use case or resolved obstacle may be more appropriate. Evaluate any incentive against contribution and lasting value.
What if the campaign produces no response?
Review fit, timing and the validity of the inactivity definition. Do not solve uncertainty by sending increasingly frequent messages.
Put this into practice
Choose one inactive segment, describe the plausible obstacle and offer a specific helpful next step. Measure resumed value rather than only message activity.
