Define the conversion in business language
Write the event without using the platform's label: “a unique completed paid order,” “a qualified opportunity accepted by sales” or “a user reaching a first useful outcome.” Decide which earlier actions are useful observations and which should influence optimization.
Document the distinction between a raw form submission and a qualified lead. If both are counted together as equivalent conversions, campaign reporting may reward easier but less valuable actions.
Test the event path
- Complete the journey on representative devices and consent states.
- Check whether the event fires on the intended completion, not a button click or page refresh.
- Verify transaction identifiers, currency and values where applicable.
- Confirm how cancellations, refunds or qualification updates are handled.
- Compare a sample of platform events with operational records.
Consent choices, browser behavior and attribution rules can create differences between systems. Diagnose those differences rather than assuming the analytics total must exactly equal the advertising platform total.
Audit record
| Check | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Event meaning | A written definition and business owner. |
| Duplicate prevention | A test showing how repeated completion is handled. |
| Value | The source, currency and calculation used. |
| Timing | Conversion date, click date and expected lag. |
| Reconciliation | Sample IDs or aggregate checks without exposing customer data. |
Worked example: a misleading thank-you page
Illustrative example: a form completion event fires whenever someone opens a thank-you URL, including bookmarks and refreshes. The campaign appears to generate more leads than the CRM receives. The repair is to trigger and validate the actual submission outcome, with suitable deduplication, rather than increase bids based on the inflated count.
After the repair, reported conversion volume can fall while measurement improves. Explain the definition change in the reporting log so the team does not confuse it with a demand decline.
Protect privacy and interpretation
Collect only information needed for the purpose and follow applicable requirements and platform guidance. Enhanced measurement is not permission to send arbitrary customer data. Get qualified advice where legal obligations or sensitive data require it.
Should every website event be a primary conversion?
No. Observational events can help diagnose a journey without becoming the campaign's main optimization goal.
Can you compare results before and after a tracking repair?
Only with the definition change clearly noted. When possible, reconstruct a comparable business outcome from operational data rather than comparing incompatible platform totals.
Put this into practice
Write the definition of your main conversion and trace five recent outcomes into the operational system. Repair the largest discrepancy before changing campaign strategy.
