Define the task and timing
Identify why the user would benefit now. A reminder about an agreed task, a meaningful update or a relevant event can have a clear job. A generic “we miss you” message may not connect to any current need.
Use accurate context and respect notification preferences. Do not assume technical delivery means the communication was welcome or useful.
Build the notification
- State the customer task and time sensitivity.
- Confirm eligibility and the appropriate permission state.
- Keep the message concise and accurate.
- Send the user to the relevant supported destination.
- Stop or adapt when the task is completed or no longer relevant.
- Review useful completion and negative responses.
Follow current platform and implementation guidance for delivery behavior. Different app states and devices can affect the experience.
Notification audit
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Relevance | Does the prompt help with a real current task? |
| Accuracy | Does the message reflect the actual state? |
| Destination | Can the user complete the promised action? |
| Control | Can the user manage appropriate preferences? |
Worked example: open versus useful completion
Illustrative example: a notification says a saved item is ready, but opens the app's general home screen without the item. Open count rises while task completion remains weak. A correct destination and clear context address the actual problem.
A test should evaluate the completed task and later behavior, not merely the notification's click response.
Avoid using urgency as a substitute for value
State genuine timing conditions when they matter. Repeated vague alerts can train people to ignore the app. Keep a notification log and remove prompts without a clear customer purpose.
Should inactive users receive more notifications?
Not automatically. Investigate why value declined and whether a relevant prompt exists. More frequency does not repair poor fit.
Can delivery be guaranteed?
No. Device, permission and platform conditions affect notification behavior. Use current implementation guidance and appropriate fallback design.
Put this into practice
Review the three most frequent notifications and write the user task each supports. Repair the destination or retire the prompt when the task is unclear.
