The short answerOrganic and paid install reports describe acquisition under particular attribution rules; they do not necessarily identify separate causal sources of growth. Paid exposure can influence later store searches, and some attributed installs may have happened anyway. Compare total useful acquisition and use controlled evidence where feasible.

Align the reporting definitions

Distinguish first downloads, redownloads, installations and account creation. Store analytics, advertising platforms and measurement systems may use different identities and windows. Do not expect their totals to match without reconciliation.

Record the source, timezone, attribution settings and maturity. Keep missing or modeled data visible. A change in tracking configuration can move installs between labels without changing actual customer demand.

Do not add incompatible installation and customer counts into a single growth total.

Worked example: paid credit rises but total growth barely moves

Illustrative example: total acquisitions rise from 1,000 to 1,050 while paid-attributed acquisitions rise from 300 to 500. The extra 200 paid-attributed outcomes are not automatically 200 additional acquisitions. Label changes, overlapping exposure and ordinary demand can contribute to the difference.

The example does not prove that advertising failed. It shows why a causal claim needs a suitable comparison rather than an attribution total alone.

Review quality after installation

Compare activation and retention at equal cohort ages. A low-cost install that never reaches the relevant task can be commercially weak. A smaller acquisition source may produce more suitable retained users.

Use a feasible holdout or regional design to investigate incremental effects, and reconcile known records before interpreting discrepancies. The channel overlap guide explains the same credit-versus-impact distinction for broader marketing journeys.
