The short answerAn app install records access to the application under a measurement definition. Activation records a defined useful outcome. The difference matters because inexpensive installs can fail to create valuable users. Write the activation event and eligible cohort before comparing acquisition sources.

Choose the first useful outcome

Opening the app or creating an account may be necessary without proving value. A relevant action could be completing a supported task, consuming useful content or making an appropriate first interaction. The event should fit the product's purpose.

State whether measurement belongs to a person, device or account. Reinstalls and multiple devices can complicate the relationship between install counts and people.

Compare the journey

  1. Define the eligible installation or first-use cohort.
  2. Choose the activation event and time window.
  3. Verify event reliability and exclusions.
  4. Compare source cohorts after equivalent observation time.
  5. Review recurring value and cost per activated outcome.

Keep acquisition and product changes documented. A lower activation rate may reflect audience mix, onboarding or an event-definition revision.

Worked example: a different ranking

Illustrative example: source A produces 1,000 eligible installs at 1 unit each and 100 activated users. Source B produces 500 at 2 units each and 200 activated users. Media cost per install favors A; media cost per activated user is 10 for A and 5 for B.

The calculation still needs later value and other costs for a full economic judgment. It shows why access and value should not be treated as the same outcome.

Outcome table

MeasureMeaning
InstallEntry under the tracking definition.
First openInitial app use.
ActivationThe defined first useful result.
Retained valueContinued meaningful behavior over an appropriate period.

Keep the event honest

Do not redesign onboarding merely to force a measurable tap. If the user completes a tutorial but cannot accomplish the task they came for, the event is a weak proxy. Check its relationship with successful customer behavior.

Can an app have several activation events?

Different use cases may require different definitions. Keep the main reporting view clear and avoid mixing incompatible outcomes into one percentage.

Is cost per install useless?

No. It helps diagnose acquisition entry cost. It should not be the only measure of customer quality.

Put this into practice

Write the difference between installing and receiving value in one sentence. Add the relevant activation outcome to the acquisition report with a documented cohort and window.
