Decompose the cost per acquisition
For a simple click-to-purchase journey, CPA equals cost per click divided by purchase conversion rate. This relationship is useful only when clicks, costs and purchases refer to a compatible population and window. Include delayed purchases before judging a recent period.
Check impression cost and click-through behavior if those measures are available. A higher cost per click might reflect a more expensive auction, weaker creative response or different placements. It does not by itself establish that competitors raised their bids.
Worked example: identical conversion, more expensive visits
Illustrative example: CPC rises from $1.20 to $1.80 while mature purchase conversion remains 3%. CPA rises from $40 to $60. The conversion journey may still deserve inspection, but the arithmetic locates the immediate change in traffic cost.
| Scenario | CPC | Purchase conversion | Implied CPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earlier period | $1.20 | 3% | $40 |
| Traffic becomes costlier | $1.80 | 3% | $60 |
| Conversion also weakens | $1.80 | 2% | $90 |
These are illustrative calculations, not auction benchmarks. Real campaign reports may use different attribution windows or modeled outcomes, so reconcile the definitions before expecting exact agreement.
Choose a comparison that reflects the season
Compare similar weekdays, promotion status and customer segments. A sale week and an ordinary week represent different offers. A prior-year comparison can provide context but may differ in product availability, tracking and market conditions.
Build a brief event log: promotions, price changes, holidays, stockouts, creative launches and site incidents. Link each event to the period it could affect. The log keeps a convenient “seasonality” explanation from replacing an investigation into a broken checkout or unavailable product.
Adjust the response to the actual driver
If traffic costs rise while customer contribution remains healthy, the decision may concern budget discipline and channel mix. If conversion falls because delivery promises become longer, coordinate with operations before increasing bids. If attribution is delayed, avoid treating an immature period as a completed loss.
Keep baseline acquisition separate from short promotions when interpreting outcomes. Do not assume a temporary discount's conversion rate will persist after prices return. Platform-specific seasonal bidding features have their own eligibility and intended uses; check current documentation before configuring them.
Build a seasonal review
Create rows for traffic cost, conversion, contribution, maturity and operational changes. Explain each movement before proposing a budget response. If several channels claim the same seasonal demand, use the channel overlap guide to prevent double counting.
